This Mandelbulb is implemented in Geometry-Nodes and works with Blender >=5.0 (as it requires the new "Volume Grids" and "Closure" updates).

For more details about the Mandelbulb math and the parameters you can control, see:

Setup Info

In this setup N is the order of the Mandelbulb. N=8 is the "optimal" value, but interesting reults can also be found with different values.

You can control which part of the volume to render by going in edit mode for the "mandelbulb" object and scaling or moving around the geometry. Alternatively, can go in the node-tree and edit manually the transform input for the position attribute, this provide the most control on scale and translation.

Additionally to the "main_mandelbulb" you can also find the Julia formulation in "main_julia". Both node-trees re-use the same util group ("3d_fractal_util") and simply provide the corresponding closure.

Rendered results can tweaked both in the shader and modifier by changing the exponent or multiply values.

New in v2

  • use Blender 5.0 "Volume Grids" and "Closure"
  • add Julia setup
  • small Mandlbulb optimization by computing value only when below target limit
